Custom Quilting
Custom quilting is a made-to-order or customised quilting plan that does not involve edge to edge quilting. Custom quilting can take many forms including:
- Uncomplicated Quilting when a minimal amount of no-fuss quilting is required to achieve a straightforward and simple finish to a quilt, only a few machine quilting techniques need to be applied. These may include straight and curved lines quilted from point to point, simple freehand patterns or block patterns.
- Freehand or Free-form Custom Quilting is the machine quilting equivalent of doodling on paper. I have built a repertoire of stitched meanderings that can be applied to either the whole quilt or sections within the quilt such as backgrounds, sashings, and borders. Quilt marking and tools such as templates and rulers are not required for this method of quilting.
- Creative Quilting involves the quilter using their individual imagination and creativity to add artistic value to a quilt. Sometimes a plan comes instantaneously and sometimes it takes longer to develop a mental picture or idea. Usually there is an established quilter/client relationship where the machine quilting professional is considered an ‘artist for hire’ and granted artistic licence to apply quilting of any form at their discretion.
- Formal Quilting is more complex and elaborate involving a high volume of machine quilting to produce a more formal and textured result.
- Heirloom Quilting is an advanced level of quilting and most appropriate when the piecing design is traditional and there are large areas of plain fabric. Such a quilt could require a combination of quilting in the traditional style such as, formal feathers, grid-work, Baptist fans, stitch in the ditch, echo quilting and more. Heirloom quilting is extremely time consuming and is priced accordingly.
